Forest Walk

Vikindu Forest Reserve offers best nature trails for walking. The forest offers long and short walk from 2 Km up to 17 Km depends on the fitness and visitors’choice. Visitors can be able to see endemic flora and fauna, beautiful viewpoints and cultural features. Weather is cool and friendly inside the forest. We have several tour guides who are well trained and   can explain the visitor about forest and features within the forest.

Camping

There are some camps that are under construction, so after the construction is over the camping service will be available to local and foreign tourists. Our camping sites continue to be built in a very modern design where each camp site will have an indoor toilet and indoor bathrooms as well as a kitchen section. It is a camp site that has some beautiful scenery along with a gentle breeze from the reef reservoir.

Walking

Inside the hot spring park tourists are allowed to walk from one place to another given the history of the place since 1905. In this conservation area there are some of the buildings used by the colonists that are still used today by natural resource workers that were built more than a hundred years ago. The buildings were also used by the German colonists until 1945 after the colonial revolution by the British colonists.

Fishing

Since the reservoir has a dam then hook fishing can be done throughout the year. The presence of a freshwater pond has facilitated fishing in our tourist area and there are also crocodiles that can be another attraction for those lovers of photography and record keeping. This dam produces sato and catfish which are good and sweet for vegetable use.

Photographic Tourism

With the presence of attractions such as hot springs, cold water ponds and grasses that thrive in the dry season and thrive along the canal as the hot water flows and withers in the rainy season, tourists have the opportunity to photograph for a memorial visit to our area. Also with the beautiful scenery present and the history of the beautiful climate there is a beautiful setting for brides to come to photograph the memorial. Also even the ceremonies of graduates of various degrees are very welcome.

Hiking

The tourist can opt to choose either short or long route for hiking where the hiking takes about 5 hours. The routes are endowed with beautiful and colored butterflies, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, squirrels, birds, insects, giant trees. Silently hiking in the forest hear only your breathing rates while you real connect with the mother of the Earth. The hiking extended to rice farms where one can enjoy and have good view of Rau forest, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Moshi town.

Cycling

RFR is the ideal place for cycling which offers a very good and spectacular environment for cycling and biking, it is amazingly beautiful to take a cycle in the beloved forest. The cyclers and bikers can a route from Moshi town through the forest to Mandaka or Mabogini and back to Moshi town. The trails are cool and quite favorable for cycling with very little movement of cars and people. The memorable experience can be accompanied with bird watching, plant viewing, photographing, butterfly watching, rice viewing, city viewing and Mt. Kilimanjaro view

Research and Studies

RFR is rich in biodiversity with high endemism of flora and fauna, high water catchment values. The reserve is perfect place for research and studies. The area is least researched  therefore the students and other researchers from different parts of the world and conduct their research in Rau forest reserve especially in the fields of botany, zoology, hydrology, geology, ecology and social science. Students from primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and university are warmly welcomed in Rau Forest Reserve to conducted research in different aspects in fields of forestry, ecotourism, history, beekeeping activitiesand culture

The area is very favorable for walking, an area are very plain with water streams during the rain season.

Forest Biking Trailing

TFS Utalii West Kilimanjaro offers a very good and spectacular environment for cyclers motor and none motorcycles. RESEARCH & STUDIES

West Kilimanjaro has the natural forest part which is rich in biodiversity characterised with high endemism of flora and fauna, in this category West Kilimanjaro is an ideal place for research on biodiversity, geology and hydrology. The area is less researched and documented therefore, students and other researchers from different parts of the world can conduct their research in West Kilimanjaro Forest (in entomology, ethnology, hydrology, geology, ecology etc.). National Forest Policy favours research and information dissemination to improve biodiversity, watershed management and soil conservation.

HORSE RIDING

For the cold environment horse rider can conduct that activities in the infrastructured destination, it’s an amazing and beautiful place for horse riding in the forest. The forest trails and roads are favourable for horse riding. The experience can be accompanied with bird watching, snow view, san-down, wild animals view, plant viewing and water streams with beautiful sounds and movements of primates, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

We offer camping services both tented camps and mobile tents for visitors inside and outside the reserve with several camping sites/grounds near Masawanga Forest Bike Trail. However, a guest can contact West Kilimanjaro friendly and reliable staffs to help you with all the arrangements in terms of accommodation whether inside or outside the reserve.

CULTURAL TOURISM

West Kilimanjaro has a great potential where by before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro you can get a wonderful experience, acclimatization and adventure at Donyomurwak Maasai (ritual) traditional worship Mountain reserve and the water falls along the mountain riverine. This is about 15-30 min drive route from the main road/Sanya juu town.

FOREST DRIVING & GAME DRIVE

Other potentials is Forest Drive in West Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve and Game driving via NARCO national ranch, meloti section, langasani camping site to Mlima Kings (with great amazing history of the colonial era). It is a prodigious plain that extend following Amboseli corridor which brings a lot of wild animals during their migration season especially from August to Early November (elephants, zebra, wild beast, warthog, birds, gazelle, antelope, lion and buffalo). Driving in this route you will appreciate the game biking while spotting the wild animals’ movements and habitation. This takes about 1-2 hours’ game drive from Siha District Office follow the Police training Camp school signboard. However, it is full of security for every one and campers.

Tourists can travel within a lake for a maximum of 3 hours.There is a plent of canoes which are owned by a Government and other stake holders with all safety equipments like peddles and life jackets. A tourist can drive a canoe by himself/herself but oftenly tour guides serves. While canoing, a tourist can enjoy the nature.

Sport Fishing

This is a kind of fishing for refreshment as a visitor will move in the shore or across a lake and he/she can catch up  a fish by the use of small hook  and bring it back to the water.

Forest Walk

Forest nature walking takes place through a small trail which pass through the whole perimeter of the lake, keeping close to the water's edge at all times. The path is normally well maintained throughout the year and a guide   accompany guests throughout the hike. The forest reserve has a relatively easy hiking trail, suitable even for beginner hikers. Ground is flat, with the exception of a few sections that require a bit of ascending and descending. There are variously types and sizes of trees in the forest with unique appearances. The whole trail covers a distance of 6Kms

Site Seeing

The visitor will see and enjoy spectacular natural and cultural landscape of the ancient town of Tabora flourished with numerous  historical monuments which include Dr.Livingstone Tembe and the grave of John William Shaw.Inside the Tembe there are a lot of archeological and historical artifacts which include the slaves chains,Dr.Livingstone hairs,a well preserved copies of New York Herald newspapers of 1872,a cross of Henry Stanley friends who was known as John William Shaw,numerous manuscripts and historical illustrations of Dr.David Livingstone and Henry Stanley Morton.The Tembe is also filled with the number of uniqueness and attractive cultural objects which include calabash,pots,spears,arrows and traditional bed which depict Tanzania culture.                                                                                       

Exhibition

The Tembe consists numbers of rooms with fascinating history.This include the slaves chamber which was used to keep slaves,the room used by Dr.David Livingstone and his assisants,the bedroom used by an arab slaves trader,donkey stable room and the room used by an interpreter who was known as Sidi Mubarak Bombay.    

Historical Site Visit

It is incredible opportunity to visit the ancient stone–town of Kaole that was founded in the 13th century, and flourished during the 14th and 15th centuries. The town was built by coral stones and mangroves. In 1937 Norman Forster described Kaole Ruins as a holy island of Islam that was devoted to Muslim burial. Many ruins with spiritual believe have remained today, and attract a number of tourists to visit the site. The famous and fascinating ruins at Kaole include the 13th century mosque which is among of the earliest mosques in East Africa; the holy water well close to the early mosque which attracts visitors for spiritual cleansing; the 13th century graveyard which contain the finest pillared tombs in East Africa, the famed lovers’ grave, and the magical Sharifat grave.

Mangrove Tour

Kaole is rich in natural mangrove vegetation that provide glimpse of the beauty and unrefined ecosystems for eco-tourism. Mangroves are trees that grow in coastlines; they can thrive in salt-water environments that most plants can’t tolerate. They are unique not only because of their amazing adaptability but because of many ecological, aesthetic and economic values they offer on land and sea communities. If not for mangrove trees, the shoreline will not be intact and purified, unclouded waters for coral reefs will not be available. You don’t need to be a botanist to enjoy various species of mangrove trees at Kaole because they are easily identified as Grey/white mangrove (Avicennia marina), red mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata) and mangrove apple (Sonneratia alba). The resilience of these plants is truly a remarkable ability that piques tourists’ curiosity.

Bird Watching

Bird watching at Kaole is a rewarding experience with a mosaic of birds from both marine and terrestrial environments. Visitors spend short-distance to spot birds which figure to approximately 400 species including; water birds, kingfishers, African spoonbill, crab plover, great white egret, Whimbrel, Little stint, Common sandpiper, Yellow-billed stork, Gray heronz, African sacred ibilis, Common bulbul and many other bird species. When canoeing near the mangrove forest you can explore many bird species.

Canoeing,Swimming & Fishing

Kaole is a small fishing village next to the Indian Ocean, its people rely extensively on the coastal resources for their livelihood. Being at Kaole village you will see local fishers setting nets and traps, mostly in traditional wooden vessels including small boats, dhows, canoes, outrigger canoes and dinghys. You will also get an opportunity to canoe with local people and learn local ways of timing and locating fish, actual fishing and try to catch a fish that will be prepared for your lunch or dinner. Bagamoyo is well-known for its unpolluted beaches, therefore tourists who come at Kaole will be able to snorkel, dive, swim with dolphins, windsurf, sail, and take dhow cruises.

Research and Education

Kaole Ruins as one of the earliest Swahili civilization sites offer remarkable opportunity for research activities in the fields of archaeology, heritage, architecture, history, and Islamic studies. The site hosts many archaeologists and historians who are determined to find the ancient cultural backdrop of the people of Kaole and the coast of East Africa in general. The specialists in heritage studies seek to understand the values of the site, management plans and conservation strategies. Experts in architecture are interested with the study of the unique architectural design of the stone-town which differentiates Kaole Ruins from other stone towns. Kaole Ruins being one of the ancient sites attest the beginning of Islamic religion in East Africa which attracts a number of Muslim scholars.

Traditional Dance

The most typical music preference of Swahili people is Taarab music which is a fusion of pre-Islamic Swahili tunes flavoured with Arab-style melodies. Other traditional coastal music adored by Kaole people are Mchiriku and Chakacha music which are commonly performed at Swahili weddings and during initiation ceremonies. The special cultural groups for traditional dances are also available at Kaole and Bagamoyo for entertaining tourists though in pre-conversation terms. The cultural groups provide stunning traditional dancing, singing and drumming merging traditions from several local tribes in the country while wearing local costumes which amaze audiences. The tourists will get opportunity to learn about traditional dancing and drumming from these groups

Camping

Kaole Ruins offer spectacular opportunity for camping activities. The site has attractive marginal marine environments close to the mangrove forest which offer fresh air suitable for tourists camping necessities. Visitors are advised to come with camping materials which include tents and other accommodation materials such as sleeping bag, pillow, sleeping mat, and torch.

Filmimg

This is another amazing service offered at Kaole Ruins where visitors undertake professional filming and photography around the ancient ruins for commercial, educational or personal collections. Visitors mostly come to take pre-wedding photos and movies, documentary, and shooting videos. However, common photography or filming using smartphones or ordinary cameras are not liable to charges

Worshiping

Kaole is considered a holy place where visitors get opportunity to visit and pray at the Early Mosque and the Sharifat Grave. The early mosque is still respected by the Muslims and used for prayers. Although there are no daily organized devotions but visitors who get to the site prefer to pray in this mosque

At Kolo Complex we have two hundred (200m)  for hiking and trekking within Irangi Escarpment Forest Reserve while at Chora Complex also we have three hundred (300m) for hiking and trekking within Salanka Forest Reserve.

Forest Walk

Walking under forest canopy can take someone’s day.

Mduleni Trail: One of the best trail is beginning at the main gate with a distance of 2km to reach the picnic site (mduleni). During the walk visitors can get chance to spot birds, insects, different animals, also you can learn different names of plant species as well as their uses. Also, along this trail you can observe beautiful uniform stand of natural trees.

Ulambo trail: This trail from Main gate to Ulambo is the plain land filled by grass and baobab where grazers prefer to forage during the day. Therefore you can easily view animals and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Hiking

One of the interesting activities is the hiking from mduleni to Daweni view then to the hippo pool. At the Dawen view point the visitor can communicate with mobile phones (Network point). This point is also ideal or taking photos to get the best look of the low plain of coastal forest and hippo pool. There are after hiking continue to Hippo pool where you can view hippos, crocodiles and fishes. During hiking apart from observing different types of coastal trees also, you can spot different birds and enjoying support of climbers when moving.

Api-Tourism

Api tourism is among of the most preferred activity in Pindiro Nature Reserve, it can take a whole day of a tourist just to get different stories of bees and observe their behavior and division of labour. During harvesting season the willing tourists can harvest and get a taste of natural honey.

Observation of hives done to see cleary what takes place in and out of the hives through a mirror, whereby you can see wriggle dance, a communication means of bees.

This activity is done because there are important features that facilitate nature viewing, photographing and hiking. Currently,There are two view points  Msolo hill peak and kinyanuiko view tower which is 1.3 km from Minaki dam is used as a view point for Pugu forest and Dar es Salaam City. Due to high elevation of 277 M from the sea level, there is a rop which facilitate hiking.After visiting msolo pick u can view important areas of dar es salaam Such as Posta, international air port of mwl Julius Nyerere, Mawasiliano tower,TAZARA railway and Kinyerez power station.  The view also used as an exersize place by the people who want to go to climb mount Kilimanjaro.  

CANOEING AND SPORT FISHING

The reserve have permanent natural dams such as Minaki dam,The dam are sources of water for living organisms found in the forest and for stabilizing the functioning of the ecosystem.The dam have lengh of 1.2km and width of 8-12M and there are two types of fish kambare and perege which allows fishing activities or sport fishing by using hook.the visitors is allowed to do fishing  by catching it and allow it to go or to eat inside the reserve but he/she is not allowed to go outside with it.

Another activity is canoeing,this involves sailing canoe inside the dam and we have modern canoe with life jackets which carries two to three people.

CAMPING AND BORN FIRE

PKNFR have campsites for camping, and there are luxury tents with different sizes which facilitate 1-2, 2-5, people and more than 5 people. during night camping people do born fire and barbeque. 

Walking Safaris

PKNFR  is a best place for working safaris to see different attractions through nature trails and it takes about three hours to comprete the rout it depends on the fitness of the visitors. there are knowledgable tour guides for giving informations and escoating visitors.

Bird Watching

PKNFR  is a home to a wide range of endemic and rare bird species. There are tour guide who are knowledgable in birds and they used to direct people or visitors to the area of bird watching.the areas rich in birds include kinyanyiko-batcave way were you can see and hear the butiful birds and sound.The best time for bird watching is during early morning.

RESEARCH AND TRAINING

PKNFR is one of the best areas for conducting field research and training on ecology and ecological evolution for coastal forest vegetation and low land forest ecosystems. Therefore, there is a lot to be studied including research on evolution of costal forest ecosystems, on plants, small animals, birds, reptiles and other lower class living organisms like invertebrates and amphbians.

Picnicking

There is a very welianing and accommodating picnic sit in the area where the visitor get to sit and rest while enjoying the beautiful view of the kalambo fall with birds sounds songs which relaxes the mind. The picnic site can accommodate all kinds of visitors able and disable has enough and modern washroom with enough water, which are also enquired to help the normal kind and disable people visiting the area people can also tent in the area during the day of the visit for resting a short while.

Hiking

Kalambo fall have unique and suitable temperature that makes visitor experience the presence at the fall. It has a very suitable nature walk (ecotourism trail) that is constructed to allow a good view of the fall, it’s the best place to build your endurance of experience you get action out of train.

Photographic

One among recreational activity that visitor get to do as there is viewing vinall monkey along the way. Also there is formation of rainbow that is formed by the stream of water that dispels to distance at the bottom of the fall when contract with sun rays. OUTDOOR CAMPING

Alongside the way to kalambo falls there are forests reserves that provide fresh air that add up employment of the four but also a perfect environment to camping.

Geological studies

Kalambo water fall is a product of a rift valley as a result of vertical crack that developed because of movement within the earth in late 1095. It a perfect place to go if you want to lean about the geographical formation of the region and local mythology that surrounds the rock features. And any number of wonderful lookout point from which to admire the valley and photographs.

Camping

Miziro Nature Forest Reserve has one camping site Kere hill where visitors can camp comfortably   and it’s a good area of viewing the nature of a reserve. The site is well accessible through the gravel road of  Bunazi center to Minziro ward.

Forest Walk

The reserve have one camping site and there are also total of 14 km of nature trails where visitors can enjoying walking inside the reserve while seen beautifulness of the forest.

Bird Watching

Birds found in Minziro are Guinea-Congo biome restricted, 58 of the 245 bird species recorded in the reserve are not found outside Kagera Region, while 56 of these are only found in Minziro in Tanzania.

Butter flying Viewin

The forest contains more than 600 butterfly species, surpassing any other forest in Africa. During the month of June up to September, tourists can enjoy large numbers of different species of attractive butterflies.

Hiking

MHNFR is a best place one can hike. The area offers long and short hikes ranging from 3 hours to 8 hours a day through the forest, woodland, grassland and waterfalls depending on the fitness of the visitors. One can be able to see endemic flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes of the mountain and the surroundings, viewpoints, waterfalls and cultural features/places. Weather is cool inside the forest and a bit hot in the grassland especially during dry season (September-November). There are several well informed tour guides who can explain about the local environment in terms of cultural and natural features.

Hiking Trails

Jorodom Trail: This route is 8.5 km (from the gate to the peak) and it takes 5-8 hours to summit (depending on the fitness of the visitor). It is an ideal route for hiking. The route is endowed with beautiful and colorful wild flowers, dense forest, reptiles and small mammals like dik-dik especially during the morning and evening. From this route, sunrise and sunset, beautiful scenes of Great Rift Valley and other areas/activities outside the reserve can be seen clearly.

Himit River Trail (forest trail): This route is 9km (from the gate to peak) through the Himit River and is 80% covered by dense forest with tough terrains. This route is rich in birds, reptiles and forest animals therefore is an ideal route for bird watching, walking safari and forest hiking. There are nice places for picnicking and camping and one can enjoy beautiful waterfalls and dense forest along this route.

Barjomot route: the shortest (6km from the gate) route but the toughest route one to summit. Its across also through dense moist montane forest. Via this route one can enjoy bird watching and walking safari. It is a good route also for night walking as many nocturnal animals, birds and insects can be seen (bush pigs, bush babies and birds). This route also is endowed with beautiful and colorful butterflies and wild flowers.

A combination of both nature and culture can breed a very wonderful and amazing experience; cultural tours can be conducted within the reserve and to villages adjacent to the reserve. Within MHNFR visitors can visit the local Barbaig Bomas,skin cloth making , Tourists can also visit traditional healers and participate in traditional dances and in preparation of local brew around the villages. Bird Watching

Mount Hanang’ Nature Forest Reserve is home to a wide range of endemic, rare and endangered bird species. Currently, there are no specialized bird guides who will direct you to the right watching spots available such as Jorodom-Peak and Jorodom-Gitting-Barjomot trails. One can also conduct a night walking to view some birds which can easily be seen during the night. It is advised to get/carry your own equipment for bird watching such as a camera and binoculars and best bird’s professionals

NIGHT WALK

Night walking is becoming very popular now days to most of the visitors, one can conduct a night walking inside MHNFR. It is permitted to conduct a night walking in MHNFR and one can ask for a ranger from the reserve or book a local tour guide who can offer night walking inside Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve. Some of the birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians can easily be sighted during the night. One can connect a night walking with a sunset in one of the peaks such as Nangwa peak, Gitting and Barjomot forest/viewpoints.

Hiking

a.    Manjonda Trail: This route is a 3.7 km and it takes one hours to hike. It is an ideal route for hiking. This route is a bit busy route whereby the forest rangers use it frequently for protection and surveillance. The route is endowed with beautiful and colourful butterflies, wild flowers, giant trees, reptiles especially chameleons and it is the richest route in birds therefore it is an ideal route for bird watching. At Machonda area there are nice places for picnic and camping.

b.    Mchinjidi Trail: This can be accessed from different angles of the forest through sub trails and boundary such as trail mlimani trail. Hiking distance varies among the sub trails and the trail is spectacular and ideal for a day hike especially for picnic. The trail leads to beautiful destination called Chilala peak840 m.a.s.l. At the peak visitors can see the beautiful view of Nyangao town, and the tree canopy in RNFR. Also visitors can sit and enjoy cool weather, quietness, sound of birds and their packed meals

Rock Climbing

KNFR have a significant areas cutting through the spectacular and very attractive rock cliffs of the reserve. With long time geological formations in this case there are several rock points that can be used for rock climbing including mount Ndundulu and Nyumbanitu. Currently there are no professional rock climbing guides in the reserve therefore visitors who are interested in rock climbing are advised to come with their guides and gears

CANOEING, SWIMMING, BOATING & FISHING

KNFR is a catchment forest with beautiful hydrological features, whereby most of the and lowland areas of the Kilombero valleys use its water for domestic, agriculture and industrial uses. Most of the hydrological features found inside the reserve include small dams, waterfalls, rivers, water streams. Mbingu Sister Center is only Micro Hydroelectric (HEP) user in the reserve. Ruipa, Mngeta, Londo, Igima and Rumemo are major rivers suitable for canoeing, fishing and boating in KNFR. Also if Mkungusi swamp can be modified to dam is a perfect place for canoeing, and fishing activities.

RESEARCH AND STUDIES

KNFR is rich in biodiversity characterized with high endemism of flora and fauna, high water catchment values and beautiful landscapes. The reserve is a ideal place for research and studies. The area is less researched and documented therefore students and other researchers from different parts of the globe can conduct their research in many fields. KNFR is privileged in research fields such as entomology, ethnology, hydrology, geology, soils, ecology, zoology and social studies. Researchers can access laboratory and library services from Tanzania Forest Research Institute (TAFORI), Tanzania Tree Seeds Agent, SUA e.t.c. Students from Primary schools, Secondary Schools, Colleges and Universities are welcomed in Kilombero Nature Forest Reserve to learn different aspects in field of forests, ecotourism, history, culture and beekeeping activities. The National Forest Policy favors research and information dissemination to improve biodiversity, watershed management and soil conservation.

Bird Watching

Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve contains varieties, host rare and endemic birds species. It include birds such as Uluguru Bush-shrikes and Loverridges sunbird, morels werber,  livingstone’s turaco and others. There are specialised bird guides from several tours companies who will direct you to the right watching spots such as Tegetero ,Bunduki and Tangeni range. One can also conduct a night walk to view some birds which can easily be viewed during the night.

Swimming

At Hululu waterfalls there is a swimming opportunity for visitors as Uluguru NFR is a catchmnent area,also there is a natural pond sourced from Mgeta River at Bunduki Rest House/Campsite area where visitors can swim.

Picnicking

UNFR offers camping services to visitors in terms of hiring of government tents and providing camping sites to visitors who come with their own tents. Campsites are available within the reserve including Tegetero campsites, where there is a campsite No1, campsite No2 and campsite No 3. Other Campsites are at Bunduki,Lukwangule and outside the reserve there is a campsite at Morning side. At those places tourists can have Picnic for enjoyment.

• Cultural and Historical Tourism

In UNFR we practice cultural tourism from the reserve and communities adjacent to Nature Reserve,where a tourists can get a very wonderful and amazing experience. Visitors can visit the German building at Morning side, the headquarter of the Waluguru’s Chief Kingalu at Kinole,sacred forest at Ugulo clan forest in Tegetero Village,Wanyani and Nyanyiko Clans around Bigwa village.  There is Choka Wahawi site learning  about Luguru traditions of burning wizards/witches. Also there is a natural pond near Bagilo village which is used for worshiping by local communities and is considered to be a sacred site. The Bunduki gap is a special area which links Uluguru North and South .Also it acts as a corridor for Wildlife movement between the two parts of the Nature Reserve. Tourists can also visit traditional healers at Madolla village and participate in traditional dances and in preparation of traditional food in the adjacent villages. Moreover tourists can visit farms, livestock keeping, pot making, markets, primary and secondary schools and churches within adjacent villages.

Research and educational

Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve is an important biodiversity area rich with rare, endemic and endangered species sensitive to disturbances. The Reserve is also catchment area providing water to surrounding villages, towns and farmlands, in due importance therefore the Reserve staff of Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve undertake education services and training to communities adjacent the Reserve on the importance of the Reserve, conservation and Services provided by the Reserve.

In corraboration with different institutions UNFR also conduct different Researches and educational (Training) on biodiversity resources of Flora and Fauna of the Reserve. The main stakeholders being Sokoine University of Agriculture, TAFORI, Dodoma University, University of Dar es salaam and other colleges and schools in Morogoro.

Bird Watching

Different types of birds are found inside of the reserve and ten species of birds are found only at Uzungwa Scarp. Some of these birds are Dappled Mountain-Robin,Iringa Akalat,Sharp’s Akalat,Swynerton’s Robin,White-wingedApalis,Chapin’s Apalis,Rufous-winged Sunbrd,White-Chested Alethe.

Hiking

In hiking there are three main trail namely Nilo peak which is the highest peak, lutindi peak the second peak in the reserve for size  and last one Kwemakulo trail which  direct lead into the kwemakulo peak.The distinguishing factor is that at Kwemakulo you can see the sun rise and sun set.

Camping

Camping: there are two campsites at chura campsite and Denmark campsite which are located in headquarter and the other is located inside the reserve.

According to the research done by Frontier-Tanzania 2002, the reserve has highest biodiversity value compared to other forest reserves in East Usambara. These include rare, endangered, vulnerable and threatened species of outstandingly values.  All ecotourists and Researchers with various interests eg.Bird watchers, Botanists and Zoologists as well as Mountain climbers/ hikers will satisfy their needs when visiting our nature reserve

Tourists may attend festivals and ceremonies to gain a better understanding of the people, their beliefs and practices. Visitors may be able to visit villages adjacent to Chome NFR to see and practice traditional dances, prepare and eat traditional foods, how to make banana beer, craftse.t.c.Chome NFR is rich in culture diversity coming from local tribe like Pare. These tribes have culture and history which will be capitalized in the development of tourism in Chome NFR.

The “Ndivankundu” is such a place that can be developed so that tourists could hear the stories about cultural places like that. Each tribe has their own worship forests which tell a slightly different story from their neighboringtribe. The diversity of these stories is one of the strength in developing strong culture tourism .Culture dances and food is potential product that can be developed. Experiences show that visitors are impressed with Pare cultural dances and their life styles.

Hiking and Trekking

The MRNFR offers long and short hikes ranging from 3 hours to 6 hours a day through the forest depending on the fitness and demand of the visitors. One can be able to see endemic flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, viewpoints, craters, water reservoir and cultural features. . During hiking one can witness the beauty of Lake Ngosi.

Camping

The Reserve has sites for camping services to visitors in terms of hiring of tents from the office and providing camping sites to visitors who come with their own tents. Three camping areas and one campsite are available within the reserve including Minde, Mchangani and Kandoro campsites.

Bird Watching

The tourist can able to observe the different species of birds, either as a recreational activity or as a scientific research, when he or she is conducting walking safari and hiking with the influence of different species of birds available such as weavers, hornbills, sparrows.

Photographic Tourism

Slopes of a Mount Rungwe Nature Reserve is a catchment forest with beautiful hydrological features, include craters, rivers, water streams, forest which is the best place for photographing.

The tourists can take different pictures within the nature also the environment are conducive for video shooting.

Walking Tour

The tourist can be able to conduct walking safari within the reserve whereby on the way they can explore different flora and fauna.

Hiking Trails

I. Grewal Trail: This route is a 7 km and it takes five hours to hike. It is an ideal route for hiking, but one can drive too. This route is a bit busy route whereby the forest rangers use it frequently for protection and surveillance. The route is endowed with beautiful and colourful butterflies, wild flowers, water streams, giant trees, reptiles especially chameleons and it is the richest route in birds therefore it is an ideal route for bird watching. At Grewal area there are nice places for picnic and camping. Grewal dam can offer very beautiful scenery, fishing and canoeing activities.

II. Juma Kahema (K.J trail): This is a 6.67 km route from Magamba Secondary school to Ndabwa Village, extending to Kinko village or passing through Kwehondo Peak.This is a 4:30 hours hiking route and it is a very beautiful trail, it passes on the farm lands extending to the rain forest and it is recommended for the visitors who are hiking to Mtae village. It has a steep slope but enjoyable. At this route you can be able to see black and white colobus monkeys, birds, reptiles, and insects i.e. very rare forest spider known as jewelled spider (Gasteracanther spp.). Through this route visitors can be able to see kwehondo peak with 2170m.a.s.l which is the highest peak within Magamba Nature Forest Reserve.

III. Kigulu Hakwewa Trail and peak: This can be accessed from different angles of the forest through sub trails such as SEKOMU trail, Mshai trail, kwembago trail and Kwesimu trail. Hiking distance varies among the sub trails and the trail is spectacular and ideal for a day hike especially for picnic. The trail leads to beautiful destination called Kigulu Hakwewa peak 1840 m.a.s.l. At the peak visitors can see the beautiful view of Lushoto town, sisal estates in Mombo town, Mafi hills in Korogwe, Maasai plains in Mombo town and the tree canopy in MNFR. Also visitors can sit and enjoy cool weather, quietness, sound of birds and their packed meals

IV. Skyline and Jiwe la Mungu trail: This is full day (ten hours trail) for walking and hiking. It is also ideal trail for driving, motor biking and cycling. Visitors can start hiking from MNFR office to Shume skyline which is 23km and 13.6 km from Skyline to Jiwe la Mungu. It is recommended for adventurers, nature lovers, motor bikers and cyclers. The trail passes through Magamba Nature Forest Reserve. At this route one can enjoy a very spectacular view at Shume skyline, beautiful geological features at Jiwe la Mungu and cultural activities at jiwe la Mungu. Moreover at the route one can do bird watching activity at Grewal area and can be able to see two horn chameleons, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, butterflies, insects, beautiful endemic trees, wild flowers, shrubs, water streams and dam. One can also be able to visit old saw mill and buildings at Grewal area and visit old German buildings and ruins at Shume Nywelo village.

CYCLING & MOTORCYCLING

Magamba Nature Forest Reserve offers a very good and spectacular environment for cycling and motor biking. Cyclers and motor bikers can take a route from MNFR-Head office though the forest to Shume and Mtae. The route is cool and quite with very little movement of cars and people. Cyclers and motor bikers from Mtae can use this route through Shume Manolo, Viti, Gologolo, and Nywelo and through Magamba Nature Forest to Magamba Village and then Lushoto town. There are professional cycling guides in Lushoto town from tourist organisations who can accompany you throughout the tour.

SKYDIVING&SKYLINE

Through several mountain peaks found in MNFR skydiving can well be arranged and enjoyed through parachutes and skyline. The best peaks which can be used for skydiving include Kwehondo peak 2170 m.a.s.l. Tourists can also enjoy a ride with a skyline from Shume area to Mkumbara Tembo Chipboard Industry. Skydiving can also be conducted in other parts of the mountains such as Kwegole peak in Lushoto and Ndekai Cliff at Lushoto town.

ROCK CLIMBING

These sites can offer very authentic and adventures to tourists.  Currently there are no professional rock climbing guides in West Usambara mountains, therefore visitors who interested in rock climbing are advised to come with their guides and gears.

HORSE RIDING

Currently there are no horse riding services in the Usambara Mountains and MNFR in particular, but MNFR is an ideal place for horse riding. It is amazingly beautiful to take a ride in the forest. The trails and drive routes are favourable for horse riding.  The experience can be accompanied with bird watching, plant viewing, animal viewing, passing on water streams with beautiful sounds and movements of primates and birds.

Forest Trailing

The tour starts early from Napuru Picnic Site to Narok Waterfalls at Narok Range. Takes 6hrs

Uniquness of the Trail, tourists will encounter endemic bird species, Waterfalls, White & black colubus monkey, Breathtakin view points.

Napuru Hiking

Hike to Mysterious Napuru waterfalls through nature trail walk while doing Bird watching. Follow the river bed with your water proof shoes or slippers to where the waterfall is located. Listen to hundreds of tails on what local people believe about the falls, locally named by Maasai ‘NAVURU’ with 78m high. After enjoying the falls, start your journey back, through the river bed and then a short hike up.

Picnicking

Spectacular picnic sites are vaialable for those bring their drinks and bush lunch. The sites are installed with basic facilities for your adventure. We apply the principle of ‘TRASH-IN TRASH –OUT’. Visitors are advised to avoid littering in the forest

Village Cultural Tour

Take an opportune time to visit the local people, sing and dance with them and learn about their life style in typical African villages. Your local guide from the community will lead you to a massive fig tree used by Maasai (Illarusa dialect) as holy worshiping site. Listen to stories about what local people believe about these majestic trees and learn how they give their offerings to their gods. The tour proceeds to local farms, Maasai homes, herbalist and midwife who will spend their glorious time with you sharing their traditional knowledge how they prescribe, identify the right medication to cure local people using local plants. The tour ends with a traditional lunch prepared by Naramatisho women group. The tour is also combined with visit to local schools to learn about our education systems as well as other community projects

Camping experience

The area provide an amazing experience of outdoor recreation activity in tents, recreational vehicle, tented campsite and eco-lodges and offers privacy, nature experience, fresh air and refresh mind. Variety of activities like BBQ, Storytelling, Maasai dance, Bonfire, hiking experience, nature trekking, birdwatching.

Research and Studies

Meru forest is rich in biodiversity of flora and fauna that makes as an ideal place for research on biodiversity, geology and hydrology. The area is less researched and documented therefore, students and other researchers from different parts of the world can conduct their research in area of entomology, ethnology, hydrology, geology, ecology etc.
